Understanding Surface Water

How Surface Water Affects Local Well & Groundwater

Surface water levels can affect private wells and long-term water availability in Panola County. Tracking river and stream conditions helps residents understand drought risk, well reliability, and the reasons behind water management decisions.

Rivers, Streams, and Groundwater in Panola County

The Sabine River, along with all other surface streams and lakes, plays an important role in Panola County's hydrology.

The Carrizo Wilcox aquifer, which outcrops in Panola County, is in direct communication with the Sabine River and other large surface water bodies via springs and seeps. In Panola County, groundwater enters the river as discharge from the aquifer.

Therefore, the Sabine River water level stages are another indicator of the hydrologic "health" of Panola County.
